  • Rice is the staple food of half of the world’s population and is essentially a crop of Asia as more than 90% of rice is grown and consumed in Asian continent. It is very ancient and has been domesticated since thousands of years. Although rice is basically a tropical crop with regard to its climatic requirements it is also the most prominent crop in temperate areas covering major parts of China apart from Japan and Korea.
Rice brown planthopper (BPH) is one of the insects associated with rice crop in the entire tropical Asian belt comprising of Indian subcontinent (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka) South-East Asian countries comprising of Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia. However, BPH remained inconspicuous as a pest until early 1970s when short statured high-tillering, high nitrogen responsive varieties occupied major areas in the entire Asian continent. Only after 1973, BPH started appearing in epidemic form damaging vast areas. Further, its nature of damage is such that the farmer cannot recognize the insect from the bund until initiation of hopper burn. That is too late to take up any control measures and results in substantial yield losses.
Apart from lot of research conducted so far on various aspects of BPH, two International Symposia were held under the auspices of International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) Philippines in 1978 and 2008 and the proceedings have been published. Compared to the vast information published globally on BPH the information covered in international symposia is meager and sketchy. Hence this book is the first attempt to pool the information on as many aspects of BPH as possible globally. Hence it is named as “Rice Brown Planthopper- a Global Scenario” and we sincerely hope that the information is up to date and serves the purpose for which it is intended and useful to all those related to the subject.
